Dry Eye

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterised by loss of homeostasis of the ocular surface, accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability, hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities play etiological roles.4 It can be attributed to a variety of factors, including dry, heated or air-conditioned environments, auto-immune diseases (such as Sjogren Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus), and the prolonged exposure to screens including smart phones and laptops.5

The prevalence of dry eye disease is difficult to estimate as there is no defined diagnostic test. Although it can affect people of any age, it is more prevalent in women and those over the age of 50.5,6 It is reported that 33% of people aged 65 years or over have dry eye disease, though this is likely to be an underestimation of the true prevalence.6
